Advanced Course in Visual Arts

The Advanced Course in Visual Arts is an intensive workshop for young artists from all over the world. The Course opened in 1988 under the patronage of the municipality of Como, and was given the structure of a seminar- based summer course. The Course initially focused on drawing, while since 1995 - under the direction of Annie Ratti - the Course started to concern itself with experimental visual languages, techniques and themes, thus becoming a laboratory for artistic and theoretical experimentation.

The Course runs for three weeks, and includes lectures and seminars with the participation of artists, critics and representatives of various disciplines, plus classes held by the team of internal curators, daily workshops at the presence of the Visiting Professor and final exhibitions.

The Course's distinguishing feature is that the students have the opportunity to work side by side with renowned artists and to compare their work with that of other students who come from different artistic backgrounds. The teaching approach varies every year according to the programme and the set up chosen by the artist appointed as Visiting Professor.

The participants are selected from a choice of more than 400 young artists from all around the world.

The Course is free of charge and open to 20 participants, chosen by a selection committee. Travel, housing, and living expenses as well as material costs for the production of the works are covered by the individual student.
During the year after the Course, the participants have an exhibition in Milan, in collaboration with C/O Careof, Fabbrica del Vapore, Neon fdv and Viafarini. This show is yet another opportunity offered by the Fondazione to its students to be known by art critics and by a vast public of art lovers. During the opening three of works on display will be selected for the Epson FAR award for artistic research.

The activities of the Course are documented every year in a catalogue part of the bilingual (Italian/English) series Advanced Course in Visual Arts Publications.
